European Union supports local initiatives for sustainable development in Karkaralinsk: winners of the GLocal project competition announced

On 12 December 2025, an important event for the region took place in Karkaralinsk – the announcement of the winners of the local initiatives competition within the project “GLocal – Advancing the Localization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Kazakhstan.” The project is implemented by the Association of Civil Society Development ARGO in partnership with ECOCENTER and Support Initiative, with financial support from the European Union. GLocal is a programme that helps regions adapt the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to their own priorities and translate them into concrete, tangible solutions for people. In Karkaralinsk, the work is carried out in close partnership with the local community, the akimat and civil society organizations. A territorial SDG model has been developed, research has been conducted, and key development priorities have been identified and incorporated into the Karkaralinsk Development Plan for 2025-2027.

One of the core components of the project is the local initiatives competition – a tool designed to support ideas that emerge directly from the community.

More than 18 million KZT has been allocated for the implementation of the best proposals in Karkaralinsk. Funding was awarded to three initiatives aimed at developing human potential, supporting the local economy and promoting a sustainable approach to territorial development.

    1. “Path to Knowledge,” Jarqyn bolashaq Public Association. The project aims to expand access to quality education for children from vulnerable families. The initiative includes additional classes, development of learning skills and support for schoolchildren experiencing educational difficulties.
    2. “Workshop of Taste and Form,” Azamat Public Association. The project aims to support women’s economic activity in Karkaralinsk and surrounding villages. Over the course of a year, 30 women will receive training in craft skills, local food processing and the basics of entrepreneurship.
    3. SDG Hub Karkaraly, Qaiyrymdy Ister Birlestigi-Qarqaraly-2018 Public Association of Persons with Disabilities. The initiative establishes the first regional platform for promoting the Sustainable Development Goals — a space where residents can access information on the SDGs, develop their own projects and participate in dialogues and events.
